Zurich, Switzerland's
most populous city is reputed to be the intellectual and cultural
capital of the nation. It's most famous burst of creativity came in
1916 when the
Dada art movement
emerged from the Cabaret Voltaire - strangely enough at exactly the
same time those playful dudes Lenin and Trotsky were also in residence.
Today the city is more famous for its pinstriped gnomes and art
galleries, and for the way it manages to balance finance and aesthetics.

#023 (
2001)
- This record was commissioned by "Migros
Kulturprozent", a swiss cultural organisation. Project curator /
soundartist Roli Widmer put together a 60 minute CD with sounds from
various locations and projects involving the Migros shopping centers,
which are spread across Switzerland. Such as radiospots, atmo,
internal education films, talkshows,
concerts given and such alike. This CD was then mailed to
cutting edge musicians allover the world. The
resulting "remixes" are different in style. All tracks are exclusive.
The resulting double 12" LP was limited to 2000 copies, however the
record was never released for sale, just given away to the artists
involved and used for promotion. The record comes in a foldout cover
with the original CD attached to the inside.
Genesis
P. Orridge (his band,
Psychic
TV, released
23 albums on the 23rd of
each month for 23 months) told the members of another British band,
Cabaret Voltaire, about the enigma. They showed interest, but
skepticism. Two days later, Genesis received a phone call from them:
"You bastard! . . . We've come to Holland to do
three gigs, and in every hotel we've had room 23, and the gig on the
23rd
was a complete disaster. And everywhere we turn, there are 23s. What
have
you done?"
"Well, I did say you'd
start noticing it," answered Genesis.
the only edition of _Cabaret Voltaire_ magazine
