The most northerly tip of
New
Zealand is not Cape Reinga, but rather Kerr Point (near North Cape).
However the most popular point is Cape Reinga. The translation of Reinga
is 'place of leading', an allusion to a
Maori
legend in which spirits depart. Cape Reinga has no facilities except for
a tiny little post office that was New Zealand's most northerly.
The are no facilities at
Cape Reinga except the famed
lighthouse
and a post office. Regular visitors get spectacular sea views. The joining
of the Pacific and Tasman is also visible, sometimes generating
waves
10 metres high in stormy weather.
