[Middle English frogge,
from Old English frogga.]
frog (frôg), tailless, freshwater AMPHIBIAN (order
Anura) found worldwide. Some frogs require moisture and are highly aquatic;
others, such as TOADS, are more terrestrial. Frogs have bulging eyes, short,
neckless bodies, long, muscular hind legs for jumping, webbed feet for swimming,
and smooth skin, usually green
or brown. They capture insects and other food with a sticky, forked tongue.
Most frogs lay eggs in early spring, and by the end of summer METAMORPHOSIS
to a four-legged adult is complete. True frogs belong to the Ranidae family,
which includes the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) and other North American frogs.
There are close to 4,000 known species
of frogs, including toads. They range in size from less than half an inch to
nearly a foot long and come in a rainbow of colors and patterns.
A frog's long, sticky tongue
is attached in the front of its mouth, and, as a signature move, a frog
can flick its tongue out to capture its prey with remarkable speed.
The biggest frog is the appropriately
named Goliath frog (Conraua goliath) of Cameroon. They reach nearly 30cm
(a foot) and weigh as much as 3,3 kilograms. The smallest frog is the Gold
frog (Psyllophryne Didactyla) of Brazil. They grow to only 9,8 mm (3/8
Frogs are found on every continent
"In Rome, the frog was sacred to Venus, of whom Hecate
was one aspect. Her triple yoni sometimes was shown as a fleur-de-lis composed
of three frogs. To this day, a garment closure of cord shaped like a fleur-de-lis
is called a 'frog'. Tailor's folklore said every garment should have exactly
nine frogs, which might be traced all the way back to Babylonian
cylinder seals showing nine frogs as a fertility chart: the Ninefold Goddess
ruling the nine months of gestation."
- "The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myth's and Secrets",
A "frog" is a device at the
intersection of two railroad tracks to permit the wheels and flanges on
one track to cross or branch for the other.
The underside of a horse's hoof
is called a frog. The frog peels off several times a year with new growth.
"The ancient Egyptians
had a Frog Goddess Hekt or Heqat who was the power of the waters,
the midwife at the birth of the world, protectress of mothers and the new-born.
Later the frog was also an emblem of Isis and Hathor as Great Mothers, goddesses
of fertility and birth."
- "Dictionary of Symbolic & Mythological Animals",
"It is not surprizing that the four
male creator gods worshipped at Hermanopolis had frogs' heads, just as their
four female counterparts had snakes' heads - both were creatures symbolic of

- Frogs never drink. They absorb water
from their surroundings by osmosis.
- Frogs cannot swallow with their eyes open.
- A frog's tongue
is attached to the front of its mouth.
- Wood Frogs are freeze tolerant and spend winters frozen
on land, only to thaw in the spring and begin their breeding process
in vernal ponds. They use the glucose in their body to protect their vital
organs while they are in a frozen state.
- Frog bones form a new ring every year when the frog
is hibernating, just like trees do. Scientists can count these rings to discover
the age of the frog.
- It was discovered on a space mission that a frog can
throw up. The frog throws up its stomach first, so the stomach is dangling
out of its mouth. Then the frog uses its forearms to dig out all of the stomach's
contents and then swallows the stomach back down.
- No animal, once frozen solid (i.e., water solidifies
and turns to ice) survives when thawed, because the ice crystals formed inside
cells would break open the cell membranes. However there are certain frogs
that can survive the experience of being frozen. These frogs make special
proteins, which prevent the formation of ice (or at least keep the crystals
from becoming very large), so that they actually never freeze even though
their body temperature is below zero
Celsius. The water in them remains liquid: a phenomenon known as 'supercooling.'
If you disturb one of these frogs (just touching them even), the water in
them quickly freezes solid and they die.

sample: "Do you think that the amoeba
it would evolve
into the frog? And when that first frog shimmied out of the water
and employed its vocal cords in order to attract a mate onto the turn of gravity,
did that frog ever imagine
that the insignificant call would evolve into all the languages
of the world into all the literature of the world? And just as that froggie
could never have conceived of Shakespeare
so we can not possibly imagine our destiny. Look, if you take the
whole of time
and represent it by one year, were only in the first few moments of the
first of January. There's a long way to go. Only now were not going
to spout extra limbs and wings and fins because evolution itself is evolving.
When it comes, the apocalypse itself will be part of the process
of that leap of evolution. By the very definition of apocalypse, mankind
must cease to exist, at least in a material form. We'll evolve into something
that transcends matter, into a species of pure thought. Are you with me?" @
