• In the opening scene where the Heathers are playing croquet, Heather McNamara is wearing a wig.
• J.D. tricks Veronica into killing the jocks by claiming to use "ich luge" bullets which he claims only pierce the skin. Ich luge is German for I'm lying.
• The police officers are named Milner and McCord, after Kent McCord and Martin Milner, who played police officers in Adam 12.
• Friends Veronica Sawyer and Betty Finn are named after other fictional friends Veronica and Betty from the comic strip "Archie", and Tom Sawyer  and Huckleberry Finn.
• The highschool is named "Westerberg High".  Wynona Ryder's favorite  band at the time was The Replacements, whose lead singer is named  Paul Westerberg.
• One of the most obscure, embedded nuggets of coolness in the script of this movie is the Eskimo reference from Moby Dick. JD says,  "Eskimo. It's one word. I usually go for the whole sentence myself, but, that's perfecto." Little known is the fact that the language of  the esquimeaux (as Melville spells it) is polysynthetic, meaning the sentences are composed by combining component words to make  one big word. So in Eskimo language, all sentences are one word. This language form is seen also in Scandinavia (Norse, Icelandic).
• In the scene in the gym locker room, during which Heather Duke may actually be digesting food, we get a peek into Heather Chandler's locker. Among the magazines in it is an issue of Cosmo dated November 1979. Heather would hardly have a nine year old fashion mag in her locker. Why is it there? November '79 is when the infamous cult leader Jim Jones convinced his followers to commit mass suicide in Guyana.
