Leo Brouwer, Witold Lutoslawski, Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti and a few others have played with it; they use composed fragments that the performer can permute in different orders.  One extension of this idea to its extreme can be found in any performance of John Zorn's jazz game "Cobra," wherein pieces are created by improvising on a group of rhythmic and tonal elements; the order, development, and specific character of each piece is determined by a series of cue cards and hand gestures. It's absolutely hysterical to watch, and unlike most of the Zorn catalog, it often veers dangerously close to tonality.
