In 1964, the psychologist Roger N. Shepard published a paper entitled _Circularity in Judgements of Relative Pitch_ in the _Journal of the Acoustical Society of America_. It described the set of tones reproduced here. These tones were crafted by Shepard to eliminate all relative pitch discrimination internal linkinformation. As a result, when played in sequence, each tone sounds higher than all tones preceding it and lower than all tones following it (and vice versa when the sequence is played in the opposite order). Since there are only twelve tones in the sequence, played in a continuous internal linkloop, every tone sounds both higher and lower than every other at some point in the sequence.

well what is happening?

let us begin with the two features which that our brain uses to internal linkperceive this illusion of sensitivity to descending pitch and volume changes between these pitches the tones increase in pitch gradually rising higher until they increase to double their original internal linkfrequency

then they come back down to their original pitch, then repeat the cycle.  the key is that when the tone finishes rising in pitch, its volume matches that of the next tone above it..  since the volume changes occur gradually, and over a wide spectrum of sound, the effect is a seamless transition in the cycle.

the result is indeed all within your head
