Louis XIV (l¡´ê,
l¡-ê´)
Known as "Louis the Great"
and "the Sun King."
1638-1715
King of France (1643-1715).
His reign, the longest in French history, was characterized by a magnificent
court and the expansion of French influence in Europe. Louis waged three
major wars: the Dutch War (1672-1678), the War of the Grand Alliance (1688-1697),
and the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714).
Political Events, 218
The emperor Macrinus tries to reduce the pay of Roman troops and is defeated and slain near Antioch June 8. His successor is the Syrian Varius Avitus Bassianus, 14, a grandnephew by marriage of the late Septimius Severus, who claims to be a son of Caracalla and calls himself Heliogabalus, or Elagabalus, taking the name of the Syrian sun king.
Political Events, 1715
France's middle class, established during the Sun King's long reign, holds a solid position which will become even stronger during the next two reigns.
Ballet
Early precursors to ballets were
lavish court
entertainments
of Renaissance Italy. The first ballet for which a complete score has survived
was performed in Paris in 1581. Professional
dancers
first appeared in the mid-1600s. Court ballet reached its peak during the reign
(1643-1715) of Louis XIV, whose title the Sun King was derived from a role he
danced in a ballet. Many ballets presented at his court were created by Italian-French
composer Jean Baptiste Lully and French choreographer Pierre Beauchamp, who
is said to have defined the five positions of the feet.
