- Sun Ra
Sun Ra was one of the oddest yet
most entertaining personalities of modern jazz. The bandleader, composer and
keyboardist who claimed to be an extraterrestrial from the planet Saturn led
his Myth-Science Solar Arkestra into zones far removed from standard jazz fare.
His shows, especially late in his career, were carney affairs that included
costumes (including Mickey Mouse ears), singers and wild-looking
dancers.
Jazz purists kept their distance, but fans attracted to the idiosyncratic flocked
to hear the jazz
sage
speak his improvisational wisdom laced with humor.
Born Herman "Sonny" Blount on May 22, 1914, in
Birmingham, Ala., Sun Ra studied music at an early age. He took a conventional
path, playing in high school, studying music at Alabama A&M University,
dipping into classical music and then breaking through into the jazz
sphere thanks to the influence of Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith and Fletcher
Henderson. He later wrote arrangements for the latter.
The seeds of the Arkestra
began in Chicago, where the bandleader assembled such simpatico free spirits
as saxophonists John Gilmore, Marshall Allen and Pat Patrick. Even
though he was always ready to tweak jazz into unknown regions, Sun
Ra's early sides as a leader (on the Chicago-based Delmark imprint) were
standard modal-swing dates fueled by the collective sensibilities
of the band.
By the time Sun Ra moved his commune
of musicians east to Philadelphia in 1961, he and his band were deemed a jazz
anomaly.
That didn't stop the intrepid leader from issuing his border-busting music on
his own Saturn label (as well as micro indie ESP-Disk). Many of these hard-to-find
recordings, often printed in the low triple numbers and sold out of crates at
gigs, have found new life in an reissue series by Evidence Records.
Devo's
first show: was hired as a gag, to open up for Sun Ra at a local radio station's
Halloween
party. But no one gets the joke as the band continually assaults their shocked
and befuddled audience, with computerized noise blasts (_Subhuman Woman_) and
grating vocals (_Beulah_).

"Sideshows by the Seashore, Coney Island, NY"
- These are unedited segments of
the historic concert that was part of the "Sideshows by the Seashore"
held on June 8, 1986 in Coney Island, NY. Improvisations and songs by
Sun Ra & Cage's indeterminate performance vocals based on strict composition
methods are contrasted and find a common meeting ground as, toward the
end of the session, they play together.

Sun Ra--space-age prophet,
Pharaonic jester,
shaman-philosopher
and avant-jazz keyboardist/bandleader--land his spaceship in Oakland, having
been presumed lost in space for a few years. With Black Power on the rise,
Ra disembarks and proclaims himself "the alter-destiny." He holds a myth-vs
reality
rap session with black inner-city
youth
at a rec center, threatening "to chain you up and take you with me, like
they did you in Africa" if they resist his plea to go to outer space. He
duels at cards with The Overseer, a satanic overlord, with the fate of
the black race at stake. Ra wins the right to a world concert, which features
great performance footage of the Arkestra. Agents sent by the Overseer
attempt to assassinate Ra, but he vanishes, rescues his people, and departs
in his spaceship from the exploding planet Earth.
"the music is different here,
the vibrations are different... not like planet earth... planet earth sound
of guns, anger, frustration... there is no one to talk to on planet earth to
understand... it would affect their vibrations, for the better of course...
equation wise, the first thing to do is consider
time
as officially ended... we'll work on the other side of time... we'll bring them
here through either isotope,
teleportation,
transmolecularzation... or better still, teleport the whole planet here through
music..." - Sun Ra

- Sun Ra in the film _Space Is The Place_ (vhs/ntsc)
I'd never try to rouse something
as destructive as man. I wanna calm people down, put 'em in a sort of
dream
state, between myth and
reality.
They just gotta learn to use their intuition. Intuition is a survival
mechanism, innate knowledge of the proper thing to do. Now you got people
acting like savages, you just read the papers or watch the news. I've
seen so much ugliness and stupidity on this planet..... People here keep making
the same mistakes, history repeats itself. It's very boring for me; I've
been elsewhere, you see. I'd much rather be on
Jupiter,
there it's inexpressibly beautiful, splendorous, pure happiness. I can
see why they say the word 'jovial' come from Jupiter. I was there just
the other day, in what you might call a dream or a vision, but it was just as
real as you and I talking right here. You got to learn to understand rather
than overstand your position regarding so-called reality."
