Yves
1900-1955
French-born American surrealist
painter whose works include Indefinite Divisibility (1942) and
_Chess
Set_ (1950).
Tanguy, Yves (1900-1955),
French-American painter, born in Paris and self-trained (
autodidact).
In 1925 he became one of the surrealists. Tanguy's paintings of strange,
fantastic bones and
amoebalike
shapes, arranged in flat, lifeless, and imaginary landscapes, quickly won
recognition. His figures were smoothly painted in clear colors with painstaking
detail. He moved to the United States in 1939 and later became a U.S. citizen.
