Easter Island (ê´ster),
46 sq mi (119 sq km), in the South Pacific Ocean, W of Chile, which annexed
it in 1888. The origin of the island's unusual hieroglyphs and gigantic
carved heads, some weighing more than 50 tons, has been the subject of
much speculation by the American psychologist Werner Wolff, the French
ethnologist Alfred Métraux, and others. Thor HEYERDAHL theorized
that the heads were carved by fair-skinned invaders from the East prior
to the arrival (c.1680) of the island's present Polynesians; most anthropologists
have rejected this idea.
